Why Your Child's First Dental Visit Should Happen Sooner Than You Think

Many parents assume dental visits can wait until a child has a full set of teeth or until something hurts. In reality, starting early is one of the most important things you can do for your child's long-term oral health.

Here's why early visits matter:

  • Catching problems before they hurt - Tooth decay in young children can progress quickly. Early exams catch cavities when they're small and easy to treat before they become painful and more complex.
  • Preventing baby bottle tooth decay - Prolonged exposure to milk, formula, or juice, especially at bedtime, is one of the leading causes of early childhood tooth decay. We'll show you exactly how to prevent it.
  • Building a positive relationship with dental care - Children who start visiting the dentist early develop familiarity with the environment and routine. They grow up seeing dental visits as normal rather than frightening, a habit that protects their oral health for life.
  • Monitoring jaw and bite development - Early exams allow us to track how your child's teeth and jaw are developing and flag any concerns, spacing, bite issues, and thumb-sucking habits at a stage when they're easiest to address.
  • Guidance for parents - We'll walk you through age-appropriate brushing techniques, diet tips, fluoride, and what to expect as your child's teeth develop — so you feel confident caring for their smile at home between visits.

Dental Services for Children at Amigos Dental for Kids & Adults

We provide a full range of dental care for children from infancy through the teenage years, all under one roof, with no referral needed for the vast majority of cases.
  • Infant & Toddler Dental Exams - First visits for babies and toddlers are gentle, low-key, and focused on early monitoring and parent education. We check the health of emerging teeth and gums, review feeding habits, and give you practical guidance on home care.
  • Children's Dental Cleanings - Professional cleanings every six months remove plaque and tartar that brushing misses and give us the opportunity to check for early signs of decay or gum issues. We make cleanings fun and use tools and language appropriate for each child's age.
  • Dental Exams & X-Rays - Periodic X-rays help us see what's happening between teeth and below the gumline, areas invisible to the naked eye. We use the minimum number of X-rays necessary and follow age-appropriate guidelines for frequency.
  • Fluoride Treatments - A quick topical fluoride application after cleaning strengthens tooth enamel and significantly reduces the risk of cavities. Safe, effective, and over in seconds.
  • Dental Sealants — Thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back molars — the teeth most prone to decay in children. Sealants fill in the deep grooves where bacteria and food particles hide and are one of the most effective preventive treatments available.
  • Pulpotomy (Baby Tooth Root Canal) - When decay reaches the inner pulp of a baby tooth a pulpotomy removes the infected portion while preserving the healthy root tissue — keeping the tooth in place until the permanent tooth is ready to come in.
  • Emergency Dental Care for Children - Knocked-out tooth, a broken tooth, dental abscess, or severe toothache, we handle pediatric dental emergencies with the same urgency and care as adult emergencies. Walk in or call our 24/7 emergency line.
  • Tooth Extractions for Kids - Sometimes a baby tooth needs to come out due to severe decay, infection, or to make room for an incoming permanent tooth. We perform gentle pediatric extractions with age-appropriate numbing and reassurance throughout.

What to Expect at Your Child's First Dental Appointment

Your child's first visit is designed to be calm, positive, and pressure-free. Here's what typically happens:

CONSULT

This is the first step in the full arch process. During this appointment, you will meet with your Dr. Kurt O. Bally DMD FICOI to discuss your needs and options for dental implants. The consultation will typically take about an hour. This first and free visit is $525 value.
STEP 1
STEP 2

RECORDS

Your dentist will take a series of records, including dental x-rays, 3D scans, and photographs. These records will be used to create a treatment plan and to fabricate your dental implants.

PRE-SURGICAL CONSULT

This appointment is held before the surgery to discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure, as well as the recovery process. You will also have a chance to ask any questions you may have.
STEP 3
STEP 4

SURGERY

This is the procedure where the implants are placed into your jawbone. The surgery typically takes about 2 hours per jaw and is done safely with oral anesthesia. All patients leave with their new temporary teeth on the day of the surgery and will return within 1-2 weeks to have their first post-op visit and receive their fist implant prototype teeth. It is important to remain on a very soft diet after surgery and before receiving your first prototype.

PROTOTYPES

1-2 weeks after your surgery you will return to check your healing and receive your first set of implant prototype teeth that will be attached directly to your implants. We allow up to 3 versions of teeth during the healing process to ensure the dentist and patient is happy with the look and feel. As your implants heal your dentist will create a series of prototypes for your implant bridge. These prototypes will be used to test the fit and function of the bridge before it is permanently placed.
STEP 5
STEP 6

HEALING

The implants will need to heal for 4-6 months before the next step can be taken. Dr. Bally will also provide a night guard to help prevent excess pressure from going to your implants. As you heal you will remain on a soft diet.

PROTOTYPING AND VERIFICATION

Once the implants have healed, your dentist will create a final prototype of your dental bridge. This prototype will be verified to ensure that it is the correct size, shape, and color. Before authorizing the fabrication of your new zirconia implant smile.
STEP 7
STEP 8

DELIVERY

This is the appointment where your permanent dental bridge is placed. The procedure typically takes about 1 hour. It's a truly rewarding visit for everyone.

POST-DELIVERY CONSULT AND DOCUMENTATION

This appointment is held after your new zirconia implant smile is installed and your final night guard is given and instructions to maintain your smile are discussed. Final pictures, X-rays and video mark the end of your zirconia implant smile journey.
STEP 9
STEP 10

MAINTENANCE

Your zirconia implant smile will need to be maintained on a regular basis to ensure that it continues to function properly. This may include cleaning, adjustments, and checkups.

A gentle introduction

We start by letting your child get comfortable with the environment, the chair, the light, and the tools. Nothing happens until your child is ready. We work at their pace, always.

A simple exam

We take a look at your child's teeth, gums, and bite. For very young children the exam is brief and often done with the child sitting on the parent's lap.

Cleaning if appropriate

If your child is comfortable, we'll do a gentle cleaning and polish. For very young children or particularly anxious first-timers, we may keep the first visit to just an exam and build from there.

X-Rays when needed

For older children or where specific concerns exist, we may take X-rays. We use the smallest possible sensors and make the process as quick and easy as possible.

A conversation with you

We'll share what we found, walk you through any concerns, give you home care guidance tailored to your child's age, and answer every question you have. You're part of the team.
